The red brick Currituck Beach Lighthouse Is open seasonally to the public to climb the 220 steps to the observation platform. The lighthouse was completed in 1875. It is located in the heart of Corolla adjacent to the Whalehead Club. The spiral staircase follows the outside wall of the lighthouse with the center open so the light keeper could use a pulley system to haul the oil to the top of the lighthouse before it was converted to use electricity.
